How to Become a Pilates Instructor

Are you passionate about Pilates and considering turning that passion into a career? Becoming a Pilates instructor can be incredibly rewarding, allowing you to share the joy of movement, help others improve their physical health, and create a fulfilling career. There’s no single path to becoming a Pilates instructor. Some start with Mat certification, others dive into Reformer training, and many find a niche along the way. The key is choosing a path that aligns with your goals and learning style.

Take Pilates Classes

Before diving into training, it’s essential to test the waters. Attend a variety of Pilates classes to experience different styles, instructors, and environments. This step will help you confirm your love for Pilates and give you insight into what styles you like best.

Explore both Mat and Reformer Pilates classes. Understanding the variety of equipment and exercises will better prepare you for teaching. As instructors, it’s important to practice what we preach. Regular personal practice will not only enhance your skills but also inspire your future teaching style.

Research Certification Programs

Not all certification programs are created equal. It’s crucial to find a program that aligns with your goals, preferences, and desired teaching style. A few main differences throughout various programs include whether the training is more classical versus contemporary, apparatuses included in the training, and teaching styles.

For example, classical Pilates focuses on the original exercises created by Joseph Pilates while contemporary Pilates builds on these principles, incorporating modern strength training and movement science. If you prefer contemporary Pilates, ensure the program offers that focus. Some training programs include only a Mat certification, while others include equipment such as Reformers, Cadillacs, and Barrels. Consider what equipment you prefer and want to teach when signing up for your program.

Enroll and Complete Your Training Program

Once you’ve found the right program, it’s time to take the plunge. Each program will have specific requirements. This includes educational modules which cover anatomy, Pilates exercises, teaching techniques, and class planning. After your educational section, you will have to complete practice to gain hands-on experience to develop confidence in your skills. Along the way there may be written and practical exams demonstrating your knowledge and teaching abilities.

Make sure to dedicate time and energy to fully immerse yourself in the training. After completing the educational portion of your program, you’ll need to fulfill any additional requirements.

Your program will likely require a number of observation hours where you will watch experienced instructors to learn class flow and cueing techniques. Along with observation hours, practice teaching hours will be tracked to hone your teaching skills by working with friends, family, or small groups.

After Completing the program requirements you need to test out to get your certification! Some certifications may require continuing education and ongoing learning to stay up to date with industry standards.

As mentioned every program will be different. At Niche our test out consists of a written exam, teaching demonstration and a practical. You can view our program requirements here.
